Export Splitwise to Tricount: the steps, and which other apps take the file

8 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

EvenOut imports a Splitwise CSV for free, with expenses and payments, dates and currencies, and it flags a file it has already read. To move a group to Tricount instead, choose Import from Splitwise inside Tricount, then check the expenses and balances against the original. Keep the Splitwise file, because Tricount removed its CSV and PDF export.

Key points

  • EvenOut's Splitwise import is free, brings expenses and payments with their dates and currencies, and shows Already imported if you run the same file twice.
  • After the import, EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and repeats, charts and search are free.
  • Settle Up, Splitser, KittySplit, Cospend and Splitkaro also import a Splitwise group, and SplitPro's README says it does not import expenses yet.
  • As of October 2026, Tricount's own page lists three steps: open the Splitwise group, choose Import from Splitwise in Tricount, then check expenses and balances.
  • Export from Splitwise first and keep the file, since Tricount removed its CSV and PDF export. After any import, compare each person's net balance, not the payment lines.

What does Tricount’s Splitwise import involve?

As of October 2026, Tricount’s page for the importer gives three steps: open the Splitwise group you want to bring across, choose Import from Splitwise in Tricount and follow the prompts, then check the imported expenses and balances against the original group. Balances and currencies are the two things to look at first when the import finishes.

Export the group from Splitwise before you start, as a spreadsheet copy to keep. Tricount’s CSV and PDF export went away with Premium, and its FAQ says to email support@bunq.com if you want an export, so the Splitwise file is the copy you can make yourself.

How do you export a group from Splitwise?

Splitwise exports one friendship or one group per file, and the spreadsheet export is not marked Pro. On the web, open the group in the left sidebar, click the gear icon in the top right and choose Export Spreadsheet. On mobile, open the group, scroll the menu in the header to its far end and tap Export. The Splitwise export guide covers both paths in more detail.

The file has one row per transaction and a Cost column with the total. Under each person’s name is the effect on that person’s balance: positive when they paid or made a payment, negative when they borrowed or received one.

Say four friends, Ben, Ana, Cy and Di, rented a lake cabin. Two rows of their file, simplified:

  • Cabin, cost 240.00: Ben 180.00, Ana -60.00, Cy -60.00, Di -60.00.
  • Payment from Cy to Ben, cost 60.00: Cy 60.00, Ben -60.00.

Add each person’s column and you have the balances the new app should show: Ben 120.00, Ana -60.00, Cy 0.00 and Di -60.00.

How do you check the balances after the import?

Compare each person’s net balance with your column totals, and ignore who pays whom. In the cabin example, Ben should be owed $120.00, Ana and Di should each owe $60.00, and Cy should be settled. Splitwise’s Simplify Debts restructures who owes whom to cut the number of payments, and it never changes anyone’s total. Tricount proposes repayments aimed at the fewest transactions. In the cabin example, Ana and Di each pay Ben $60.00 whichever app you use. In a larger group the payment lines can differ between apps, or between Simplify Debts on and off, while every total stays the same.

Check currencies next. Splitwise keeps a balance per currency, so a 45.00 euro taxi that Di paid and split with Ana leaves Ana owing 22.50 euros on its own line, apart from any dollar balances. Tricount gives each tricount one currency and converts expenses entered in other currencies at the market rate, with a daily rate shown. After an import, look at how the euro line arrives instead of assuming it carried over as it was.

Which apps can import a Splitwise group?

As of October 2026, eight apps describe a Splitwise import. EvenOut’s is free and brings across expenses and payments with their dates and currencies, and what the others bring ranges from the transactions to members and balances only.

App Where the import starts What comes across
EvenOut Account, Data, Import from Splitwise, one CSV Expenses and payments with dates and currencies, free, with splits rebuilt as exact amounts
Tricount Import from Splitwise inside the app Expenses and balances, to check against the original group
Splitser A Splitwise CSV export, then Start import The group’s transactions
KittySplit CSV upload, then Preview import A preview, adjustable before the Kitty is created
Settle Up Splitwise web app’s group settings, then import while creating a group “The current members and their balances”
Splitkaro Import your groups from Splitwise People and balances
Cospend Import projects as CSV, inside a Nextcloud server CSV files from Splitwise and IHateMoney
SplitPro A self-hosted copy Partial: expenses are not imported yet

How do the free plans and prices compare?

EvenOut is free with no ads, and Pro (receipt scanning and the assistant) is its only paid part. As of October 2026, Settle Up’s free version has ads, and its Premium list includes charts, recurring transactions and Excel export.

App What it costs
EvenOut Free, with no ads. Pro is $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year, for receipt scanning and the assistant
Tricount Free, and its website says no ads. Premium was discontinued
Settle Up Free with ads. Premium removes them and lists receipt photos, recurring transactions, charts and Excel export
Splitser “Almost entirely free”, per its support page
Cospend Free and open source, and it needs a Nextcloud server

EvenOut

EvenOut’s import is free. Open Account, then Data, then Import from Splitwise, choose the CSV, name the group and match the people. You mark which person is you, and anyone left on Assign later becomes a guest placeholder you can invite to claim their share.

Expenses and payments come across with their dates and currencies. Splitwise’s file only records each person’s net change on a row, so EvenOut rebuilds every split as exact amounts. The rebuilt splits give the same balances, but the original split methods, percentages and notes are gone, and only some categories map across while the rest become General. Rows without a valid date, and rows whose balances do not net to zero, are skipped. One file makes one new group, up to 2 MB, 20,000 rows and 100 members, and a group can hold up to 200 people. The EvenOut import walkthrough has every step.

Once the group is in, the free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and repeats, charts and search are free. Set rent to repeat monthly and EvenOut adds it each month. EvenOut has no data export, so keep the Splitwise file as your spreadsheet copy there too.

Tricount

As of October 2026, Tricount is free to use. A tricount holds up to 50 people including you, and each one uses a single currency. Its own comparison page says to add each bill manually. Is Tricount free lists the paid extras around the app, and the Splitwise vs Tricount comparison sets the two side by side.

Settle Up

As of October 2026, Settle Up’s tips page says to export your data from the group settings of the Splitwise web app and import it while you create the group in Settle Up. The page names “the current members and their balances” as what comes across. The free version has ads, and Premium removes them.

Splitser

Splitser’s switch page has you create a CSV export of the Splitwise group, log in, choose Start import, pick the file, then pick your name from the list and choose Create list. Once the import finishes, you share an invitation link, and each friend chooses their own name when they join. A list holds up to 150 members. In the Netherlands and Flanders the app is called WieBetaaltWat.

KittySplit

KittySplit asks for the CSV through a Choose CSV file button, then shows a preview, and the page says you can adjust everything before any Kitty is created. A free Kitty holds up to 9 people and needs no account. Super Kitty costs 2.99 euros once per group, takes up to 100 people and adds multiple currencies with conversion.

Cospend, Splitkaro and SplitPro

Cospend is a Nextcloud app whose README lists “Import/export projects as csv (compatible with csv files from IHateMoney and SplitWise)”. It suits someone who already runs a Nextcloud server. Splitkaro’s page says to “Import your groups from Splitwise” and that it “carries your people and balances across.”

SplitPro’s README describes its Splitwise import as partial: “Expenses themselves are not imported yet.” Its README says the old community instance is no longer maintained and that SplitPro is for self hosting.

Which one should you pick?

Pick by what you need out of the move.

  • The whole expense list and payments, with dates and currencies, for free: EvenOut. Splitser’s page says the group’s transactions come across too.
  • No daily expense cap on the free plan, no ads, and free charts, search and repeats: EvenOut. Tricount’s website also says no daily cap and no ads. Keep the Splitwise file as your own copy.
  • A big group: EvenOut takes up to 200 people in a group, Splitser 150 and Tricount 50. A free Kitty holds up to 9 people and Super Kitty up to 100.
  • A spreadsheet out of the new app later: Splitser or Cospend list CSV export, and Settle Up lists Excel export under Premium.
  • One converted total across currencies: Tricount, Splitser or Super Kitty. EvenOut keeps each currency apart, and Splitwise converts only in Pro.

What should you do with the Splitwise group afterwards?

Leave it alone until the new group’s balances match your column totals and everyone has moved over. Then how to leave Splitwise gives the order for cancelling Pro and deleting the account.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import the same Splitwise file twice?

EvenOut recognizes a file it has already read: the screen shows Already imported, with an Open group button for the group you made the first time. With any other app, import the file once, check it against the Splitwise balances, and only then try again, so you never reconcile two copies of one group.

How do people claim their spot after an EvenOut import?

Anyone left on Assign later becomes a guest placeholder that shows Guest, invite to claim, and you can track their share right away. The person who created the guest makes a claim link, which works once and lasts 7 days. The guest opens it, chooses Merge into my account, and their shares move to the real account. That step cannot be undone.

Is exporting from Splitwise a Pro feature?

No. A spreadsheet export of a friendship or a group works on the web and on mobile and is not marked Pro. Only the JSON backup of a whole account is for Pro subscribers, as of October 2026.

How long does a Splitser import take?

Splitser's switch page warns that it may take a few minutes before the transactions show up in the new list. Wait for them before you invite anyone, because each friend picks their own name from the list when they join.

Which of these apps convert currencies?

As of October 2026, EvenOut keeps each currency separate with no conversion, and Splitwise converts only in Pro. Tricount converts expenses entered in another currency at the market rate, Splitser lists realtime conversion, and KittySplit's Super Kitty converts. For a group that spent in two currencies, decide first whether you want one converted total or separate lines.
