How to export a Splitwise group to a spreadsheet

5 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

To export Splitwise data, open the group or friendship. On mobile, scroll the header menu to the right and tap Export. On the web, click the gear icon, then Export Spreadsheet. You get one file per group or friend, with one row per transaction. A JSON backup of the whole account is for Splitwise Pro subscribers only. EvenOut's free Import from Splitwise reads a group's file.

Key points

  • Mobile: open the group, scroll the header menu right and tap Export. Web: gear icon, then Export Spreadsheet.
  • EvenOut's Import from Splitwise is free: it reads the exported file and builds a new group with its expenses, payments and balances.
  • EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, and charts, search and recurring expenses are free too.
  • Each export covers one group or friend, so seven groups and friends mean seven files. The JSON account backup is for Splitwise Pro subscribers only.
  • The number under a name is that person's change in balance for the row: positive if they paid or made a payment, negative if they borrowed or received one.

How do you export a Splitwise group?

Open the group or friendship you want, and use Export. The steps differ a little between mobile and the web.

On mobile:

  1. Open the friendship or group.
  2. Scroll to the right in the horizontal menu in the header.
  3. Tap Export, the last button in that menu.

On the web (splitwise.com):

  1. Open the group or friendship from the left sidebar.
  2. Click the gear icon in the top right corner.
  3. Click Export Spreadsheet. Some Splitwise help pages word it “Export as spreadsheet”.

How many files do you get?

One per group or friend. As of October 2026, Splitwise’s spreadsheet export covers a single friendship or group at a time, not the whole account. If you belong to four groups and split with three friends outside groups, that is seven exports.

Each file has one row per transaction, expenses and payments alike. A “Cost” column holds the transaction’s total, and each person has a column showing that person’s effect on their own balance.

Which exports do you actually need?

It depends on why you are exporting.

  • Leaving Splitwise for good. Every group and every friend whose history you want to keep. Export before you delete anything, because deleting a group removes it for every member.
  • Moving one group to EvenOut. Only that group’s file. EvenOut builds one new group per file, so a second group means a second export and a second import.
  • Checking one balance. Only the group or friend in question.

Exports of different groups look alike, so rename each file after its group before you export the next one. Seven files named after seven groups are easy to sort. Seven files with similar names are not.

How do you read the numbers under each name?

The number under a name is how that row changed that person’s balance. It is positive if the person paid for an expense or made a payment, and negative if they borrowed for an expense or received a payment.

Say Alex pays a $60.00 dinner and it is split equally among Alex, Bea and Chi. Each share is $20.00. Alex paid 60.00 and owes 20.00 of it, so Alex’s number is 40.00, and Bea and Chi each borrowed 20.00. A week later Bea pays Alex $20.00, which is a payment.

Row Cost Alex Bea Chi
Dinner, paid by Alex 60.00 40.00 -20.00 -20.00
Bea pays Alex 20.00 -20.00 20.00 0.00
Sum of each column 20.00 0.00 -20.00

The sums are the balances: Alex is owed 20.00, Bea is settled, and Chi owes 20.00. Any person’s column works the same way.

How do you check the file against the app?

Add up the column under your own name and compare the total with Balances.

  1. Open the file and find the column headed with your name.
  2. Add every number in it. If the group uses more than one currency, add each currency on its own.
  3. Open Balances in the group header and read your lines.
  4. Compare the two.

Say your column adds up to -35.00 in dollars. Balances should show that you owe 35.00 in total across the people listed. If Simplify Debts is on, the names on those lines can differ from the people you actually paid, because it rearranges who owes whom, but the total is the same. When the file and the app disagree, the next step is the balance audit.

Is exporting a Pro feature?

Splitwise does not label the spreadsheet export as Pro. The JSON backup is different: Splitwise says it is for Pro subscribers only. On the web, click your display name, then Your account, scroll to Advanced features and click Download JSON backup.

For everything in your account without Pro, Splitwise’s route is to email support@splitwise.com.

What can you do with the file?

Two uses come up most often.

  • Move the group to EvenOut. Import from Splitwise (under Account, then “Data”) takes the exported file through its “Choose CSV file” button and builds a new group from it, for free. EvenOut suggests matches for people by name, brings in the expenses and payments with their dates and currencies, and restores each balance. The full walkthrough is in how to move a Splitwise group to EvenOut.
  • Keep it as the record. Export before you delete a group or leave Splitwise, so you keep your own copy of the history. Leaving Splitwise puts the export first in its order, and the steps for deleting a group are in how to delete or undelete a Splitwise group.

Once a group is in EvenOut, it runs on the free plan with no daily expense limit and no ads. EvenOut can read a Splitwise export, but it has no data export of its own.

What to do next

Export each group you care about, open the file, and check that the columns add up to the balances the app shows. Keep the files somewhere you will find them. If you plan to leave Splitwise, export first and decide afterwards.

To keep splitting with the same people, import each file into EvenOut and compare its Balances with what Splitwise showed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get everything in my Splitwise account in one export?

The spreadsheet export is per group or friend, so it cannot do that. Splitwise's help article says to email support@splitwise.com if you want everything in your account. Pro subscribers can use the JSON backup instead.

Does exporting change or delete the Splitwise group?

No. An export only produces a file. The group, its expenses and its balances stay exactly as they were.

Can I import several Splitwise groups into EvenOut at once?

No. Each file becomes one new EvenOut group, so export and import each group on its own. A file can be up to 2 MB, 20,000 rows and 100 members. Importing the same file twice shows "Already imported" and opens the group you already made.

Why do the numbers on each row add up to zero?

Each row records who paid and who borrowed, so what one person gains the others lose. In the $60.00 dinner example, 40.00 minus 20.00 minus 20.00 is 0. EvenOut's import skips any row whose balances do not net to zero.
