How to leave Splitwise: export, settle, cancel Pro, delete
Quick answer
To leave Splitwise, go in this order: export each group and friendship as a spreadsheet, settle up or record the balances you want to carry, cancel Splitwise Pro, tell your groups, then close the account. EvenOut imports each exported group for free and restores every balance, and its free plan has no daily expense limit. Permanent deletion may take up to 30 days and is irreversible, so it comes last.
Key points
- EvenOut's free import builds a group from each exported Splitwise group, matches your friends and restores every balance.
- EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit, where Splitwise's free tier allows up to 4 expenses each day, as of October 2026.
- Export first. Each group and each friendship is its own spreadsheet, and the JSON account backup is for Pro subscribers only.
- Cancel Pro from inside Splitwise before you close the account. Permanent deletion may take up to 30 days and is irreversible, so it comes last.

How do you export your data before leaving Splitwise?
Export first, because a spreadsheet is the one copy of your history that you control once the account is closed. Splitwise exports one group or one friendship per file, so most accounts need several files. The full walkthrough is in how to export a Splitwise group to a spreadsheet. The short version:
- On the web, open the group or friendship from the left sidebar, click the gear icon in the top right corner and click “Export Spreadsheet”.
- On mobile, open the group or friendship, scroll to the right in the horizontal menu in the header and tap “Export”, the last button in that menu.
- Repeat for every group and friendship you want to keep. Say you have 3 groups and 5 friendships: that is 8 files.
Each file has one row per transaction. The number under each person’s name is the effect on that person’s balance, positive if they paid or made a payment and negative if they borrowed or received one. A “Cost” column holds the total. A JSON backup of the whole account exists too, but it is for Pro subscribers only, so take it before you cancel Pro if you want it.
How do you settle up, or carry your balances over?
Decide for each balance whether to settle it now or carry it into the next app. In Splitwise, “Settle up” covers both directions: you can pay someone back or record that you were paid, including a payment made outside Splitwise such as cash or a bank transfer. Recording a payment moves no money by itself. Splitwise can send money through Splitwise Pay, Venmo and PayPal in the US, and through Pay by Bank in select European countries. Anywhere else you record the payment.
Say you have three open balances: the flat group owes you $140.00, you owe $35.50 in the ski trip group, and one friend owes you $20.00. That is three actions. Ask for the $140.00 and record it when it lands, pay the $35.50 and record it, and record the $20.00 when your friend hands it over. Anything you cannot collect before you go is still on record in your export.
If you would rather not chase people before you leave, carry a group’s balances over instead. EvenOut’s free import reads the spreadsheet, builds the group and restores every balance, as described in moving a Splitwise group to EvenOut.
Do not delete a group to get out of it. Splitwise notes that if you are settled up, leaving a group only removes you, while deleting a group removes it for every member. Deleting or undeleting a Splitwise group covers the delete case.
How do you cancel Splitwise Pro before you leave?
Cancel from inside Splitwise, and do it before you close the account. In the app, open the “Account” tab and tap “Splitwise Pro”. On the web, click your name, choose “Your account” and click “Cancel subscription”.
Where you bought Pro matters for refunds. If your phone’s own billing account was charged, the refund comes from that provider. A direct purchase from Splitwise comes with a Stripe receipt: you can ask Splitwise for a refund while logged in, the money returns in 5 to 10 business days, and the subscription is cancelled when the refund is issued. How to cancel Splitwise Pro and ask for a refund has the full steps and how to tell where you bought it.
The steps for closing an account do not include cancelling billing, so cancel Pro yourself first.
What should you tell your groups?
Tell them before you close the account, so the group can decide where to keep tracking. Your group needs three things: when you are leaving, that your balance with them is settled, and where the group goes next. A message a roommate or travel friend can act on:
I’m leaving Splitwise on the 20th. My balance in this group is settled, and I’ve attached the group’s spreadsheet. If you want to keep tracking here, one of you needs to carry on, or we can move it to another app together.
If you are the person who logs most of the expenses, the file matters more. Send it to the group so everyone has the history in hand.
How do you deactivate or permanently delete the account?
Closing the account is the last step, and it has two routes. In account settings, scroll to the bottom and select “Close your account”. From there you can deactivate, with your current password or a link sent to your email, or you can permanently delete your data, which Splitwise says “may take up to 30 days and is irreversible”. Because the permanent route cannot be undone, everything above comes first. The screens and the differences between the two are in deactivating or deleting your Splitwise account.
What changes when you move to EvenOut?
Moving a group from Splitwise to EvenOut removes the daily expense limit and puts charts and search on the free plan, as of October 2026. Splitwise’s free tier allows up to 4 expenses each day.
| What | EvenOut | Splitwise |
|---|---|---|
| Daily expense limit | None on the free plan | Free tier: up to 4 expenses each day |
| Ads | None | Ad-free is listed as a Pro feature |
| Charts and search | Free: charts per group or friend, search on the phone | Listed as Pro features |
| Group roles | Owner, Member and Viewer; “Everyone” or “Only their own” can edit | States it has no group admins or special permissions |
| People who are not on the app | “Add a guest” inside a group | Friends invited by email or phone can be added before they accept, and name-only placeholder friends are added from the web app |
| What costs extra | Receipt scanning and the assistant | Pro features include removing the daily limit, charts, search, ad-free and receipt scanning |
Expenses that come in from Splitwise can carry several payers, and the expense page lists each one under “Paid by”. EvenOut has no data export or currency conversion, so keep your Splitwise spreadsheets. They may be the only archive of the history outside the app.
What to do next
Start with the export today; everything else can wait a day. To bring a group with you, the import is under Account, then “Data”, then “Import from Splitwise”, and the steps are in the import guide. If the 4 a day cap is why you are leaving, the Splitwise daily limit guide lists what you can do before you go, and EvenOut’s free plan has no daily expense limit.
Frequently asked questions
What are the limits of EvenOut's Splitwise import?
One CSV file becomes one new group. The file can be up to 2 MB (UTF-8), 20,000 rows and 100 members. If you import the same file twice, EvenOut shows "Already imported" and opens the group it already made instead of creating a copy.
Will EvenOut keep how each expense was split?
No. A Splitwise export only records each person's net change per row, so EvenOut rebuilds a payer and an exact-amount split that gives the same balances. Rows where that was a guess carry a warning under "Notes". The original split method, percentages and notes are not recovered.
Do my friends need EvenOut for me to import our shared expenses?
No. The import matches people by name. Anyone you leave on "Assign later" becomes a guest placeholder, which tracks their share now, and you can invite them to claim it later.
If I only want to stop paying, do I have to delete my account?
No. Cancelling Pro and closing the account are separate actions. Once Pro is off, the free plan applies, and it allows up to 4 expenses each day. EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit.
I deleted a group by mistake. Can I get it back?
Yes. Undeleting restores the group and all of its expenses and payments. On mobile, open the Activity tab, tap the deletion record and tap "OK". On the web, open "Recent activity" and choose "Undelete group".
