How to delete or undelete a Splitwise group
Quick answer
To delete a Splitwise group, open the group, tap the gear icon and choose Delete group (on the web: gear icon, Edit group settings, Delete group). It removes the group for every member. To undelete it, restore it from Activity. In EvenOut, Mark as complete tidies a group out of your own list only.
Key points
- EvenOut imports a Splitwise CSV into a new group for free, and the Splitwise group stays untouched until you decide what to do with it.
- If you move a group to EvenOut, its free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. Splitwise's free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026.
- Deleting a Splitwise group removes it for all members, not just you, and every transaction in it. Undeleting brings back the group with its expenses and payments.
- Export the group first. Splitwise exports one group at a time, so each group you plan to delete needs its own file.
- EvenOut's Mark as complete tidies a group out of your own list only, and Reopen group brings it back. It does not touch anyone else's list.

How do you delete a group in Splitwise?
Open the group’s settings and choose Delete group. Read the next section before you do, because, as of October 2026, deleting a group removes it for every member, not just you.
On mobile:
- Tap the Groups tab.
- Tap into your group.
- Tap the gear icon in the top right corner.
- Scroll down and tap Delete group.
On the web (splitwise.com):
- Find the group in the left-hand sidebar.
- Click the gear icon at the top of the page and choose Edit group settings.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Delete group.
What happens to the other members?
The group disappears for all of them, and every transaction in it goes with it. Say a household group holds 38 expenses and 6 payments. Delete it and all 44 records disappear from every member’s account, including people who were still owed money in it.
So treat deletion as a group decision. Settle up first or agree on the final balances, and keep a copy of the history. If you are the only person who wants out and you are settled up, Splitwise’s help center points to leaving the group instead, which it says “only removes you”. The order for stepping away from the app entirely is in how to leave Splitwise.
How do you keep a copy before deleting?
Export the group as a spreadsheet. Splitwise exports one group or friendship at a time, so a group you plan to delete needs its own file, and five groups means five files. On the web, open the group, click the gear icon at the top right and choose Export Spreadsheet. On mobile, scroll the header menu to the right and tap Export. The full steps and what each column means are in how to export a Splitwise group.
If the group is moving to another app, do that before deleting anything. Moving a Splitwise group to EvenOut takes the exported file and builds a new group from it for free, and the Splitwise group stays untouched until you decide what to do with it.
How do you undelete a Splitwise group?
Find the record of the deletion and restore it. Undeleting brings back the group together with all the expenses and payments that were in it when it was deleted.
On mobile:
- Tap the Activity tab.
- Tap the record that shows the group was deleted.
- Tap OK on the pop-up.
On the web:
- Click Recent activity in the left-hand sidebar.
- Click the Undelete group button next to the record.
You can also undelete from your account settings page. Scroll down, click Undelete group, and pick the group you want back. Restoring one deleted expense is a separate step, covered in edit, delete and restore an expense in Splitwise.
What other ways are there to tidy up Splitwise?
Splitwise does not let you clear Activity, because it works as a record of changes. Old items drop off by themselves, since the mobile app only loads the most recent 100. The help center lists three ways to reduce clutter: delete a group, delete a friend (gear icon on the friend’s page, which removes the transactions you shared outside groups), or delete a single expense or payment by tapping it and then the trash can icon.
Deleting a single expense is the lightest of these, and it can be undone from Activity as well.
How does EvenOut tidy a group out of your list?
In EvenOut, “Mark as complete” tidies a group out of your own list (“Reopen anytime”), and “Reopen group” brings it back. It is a setting for your own list, not for the group, so it does not lock the group or hide it from other members. In Splitwise, as of October 2026, Delete group removes the group for every member, and leaving a group you are settled up in removes only you.
Settled groups with no activity for 30 days also fold under “Show N settled groups”, and completed ones under “Show N completed groups”.
What to do next
Export the group, tell the other members, and only then delete it. If you are switching apps, import the file into EvenOut before you delete anything: the import is free, and the free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. If something goes wrong, check Activity or Recent activity for the deletion record and undelete the group. Deleting a group is also different from closing your account, which is covered in deactivating or deleting your Splitwise account.
Frequently asked questions
Can I delete a Splitwise group only for myself?
No. Deleting removes the group for every member. Splitwise's help center suggests that if you are settled up, leaving the group instead removes only you.
How do I delete old Splitwise groups I no longer use?
Each group is deleted on its own with the steps above. Before you do, check that every member agrees, because the group and its history disappear for all of them, and export any group whose history you want to keep.
Should I open the exported file before deleting the group?
Yes. Exporting leaves the group as it was, so you can open the file, check that the rows and the numbers under each name match what the group shows, and delete only after that. For a group you want in EvenOut, import it first and compare the balances there.
