Edit, delete and restore an expense in Splitwise

6 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

To edit a Splitwise expense on mobile, tap it, then tap the pencil icon. To delete it, tap the trash can icon. To restore it, open Activity, tap the record that starts 'You deleted' and tap Restore (on the web, Recent activity and Undelete expense). Anyone involved in the expense or its group can do all three. EvenOut lets the group owner limit editing to 'Only their own'.

Key points

  • Mobile: tap the expense, then the pencil icon (top right) to edit or the trash can icon to delete.
  • In EvenOut the group owner picks who can edit: "Everyone" or "Only their own". As of October 2026, Splitwise has no group admins or special permissions.
  • EvenOut also has a "Viewer" role that can read and comment but not change expenses, and a deleted expense restores from its own page.
  • Anyone involved in a Splitwise expense or its group can edit or delete it. A deletion leaves a record in Activity that starts 'You deleted'; tap it and choose Restore.
  • EvenOut's free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads. Splitwise's free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day as of October 2026.

How do you edit an expense in Splitwise?

Tap the expense, then tap the pencil icon in the top right corner. The edit form opens with the expense’s details so you can correct them.

The split is set in the phrase “Paid by [you] and split [equally]”, where tapping “equally” shows the other split options, including exact amounts, percentages, shares and adjustment, all described in Splitwise split types. Save, and everyone’s balances update.

Should you edit the expense or delete it?

Edit when the expense is real but a detail is wrong, and delete when it should not exist at all.

  • Wrong amount, payer or split: edit. Say a $150.00 electric bill was typed as $15.00 and split three ways. Each share shows $5.00 instead of $50.00. One edit to the amount fixes every balance at once.
  • The same bill logged twice: delete one copy. The other stays, and the balances drop by the duplicate’s amount.

Deleted expenses can be brought back, so deleting the wrong one is recoverable. Restoring recalculates the balances, so do it before anyone settles up against the changed numbers.

How do you delete an expense?

Tap the expense, then tap the trash can icon. The same steps delete a payment.

Deleting does not erase the expense from Splitwise’s history. It adds a record to Activity that starts “You deleted” followed by the expense’s name, and that record is what you use to bring it back.

Who is allowed to edit or delete an expense?

Anyone involved in the expense, and anyone in its group. As of October 2026, Splitwise does not support group admins or special permissions, so the person who created the group or added the expense has no extra say.

That means Splitwise offers no way to limit who can change an expense. If one is changed without your knowledge, the change is recorded in Activity, and the balance audit shows where to look first. EvenOut handles this with a group setting, covered below.

How do you restore a deleted expense?

Find the record of the deletion in Activity and restore it from there.

On mobile:

  1. Tap the Activity tab.
  2. Find the record that says “You deleted [Expense Name]” and tap it.
  3. Tap Restore in the upper right corner.

On the web (splitwise.com):

  1. Click Recent activity in the left-hand sidebar.
  2. Find the record of the deletion.
  3. Click Undelete expense.

Anyone who was originally included on the expense can undelete it, not only the person who deleted it. Once it is restored, the balances in the group or friendship are recalculated.

Expenses that repeat are set up on the same form, and Splitwise recurring expenses covers stopping them. A deleted group works the same way as a deleted expense, and the steps for it are in how to delete or undelete a Splitwise group.

Can you take someone off a shared expense?

Yes, by editing the expense and removing the person from it. Splitwise’s help center describes taking someone off shared expenses this way, one expense at a time, in its steps for removing a person from a group.

Say four people share an $84.00 grocery run, $21.00 each, and Priya was not at the shop. Edit the expense and take her off. The same $84.00 now splits three ways, $28.00 each, and Priya’s share of that expense is $0.00. Her balance moves, so tell her and the person who paid before you save.

How do you clear recent activity in Splitwise?

You cannot. Splitwise says Activity serves as a record of the changes and actions on your account, and that there should be a record when someone deletes an expense. Old items drop off by themselves because the mobile app only loads your most recent 100 items.

Deleting an expense therefore adds a “You deleted” record rather than removing a line. The ways to reduce clutter are to delete a group (which removes all of its transactions for every member), to delete a friend (which removes the transactions you shared outside groups), or to delete one expense or payment at a time with the trash can icon.

How does EvenOut handle edits, deletes and restores?

EvenOut lets a group owner decide who can edit expenses, and its free plan has no daily expense limit. The two apps side by side:

Feature EvenOut Splitwise (as of October 2026)
Who can edit or delete The owner picks “Everyone” or “Only their own” Anyone involved in the expense or its group
Read-only role “Viewer” can see and comment, not change expenses No special permissions
Delete an expense “Delete expense” on the expense page Trash can icon on the expense
Restore it “Restore” on the expense page “Restore” in the Activity record, or “Undelete expense” on the web
Free-plan expense limit No daily expense limit Up to 4 expenses a day

Permissions are a group setting. The owner opens Group settings, then “Who can edit”, and picks “Everyone” (any member can add, edit or delete any expense) or “Only their own” (people change only what they added or paid for). A viewer cannot add or change expenses.

An EvenOut expense page has round buttons for “Edit expense”, “Duplicate expense” and “Delete expense”. Deleting asks “Delete this expense?” and explains that it stops counting toward balances for everyone involved and can be restored from the same page. Afterwards the page reads “This expense was deleted”, with a “Restore” button. In the Activity tab a deleted expense is crossed out.

In EvenOut, payments can be deleted and restored but not edited. For payments in Splitwise, see how to undo a settle up. The EvenOut and Splitwise comparison lines the two up on more than editing.

What to do next

Fix the expense by editing it, and delete it only when it should not exist. If you delete the wrong one, restore it from Activity right away.

If you want a say in who can change the expenses in a shared group, set “Who can edit” to “Only their own” in EvenOut, where the free plan also has no daily expense limit.

Frequently asked questions

How can I find out when someone edits or deletes my expenses?

Splitwise suggests turning on email or mobile notifications, which tell you about any expense that is created, updated or deleted. It also points to Recent Activity on the web and the Activity tab in the app, where each change is recorded.

Can I track a debt privately in Splitwise before sharing it?

On the web app you can make a group with no other members, track the debt there, and share the balances once you are ready. Splitwise suggests this for managing expenses privately.

Can I make someone a read-only member of an EvenOut group?

Yes. The group owner sets each person's role: Owner, Member or Viewer. A Viewer sees everything and can comment but cannot add or change expenses, which suits a landlord who only needs to follow along. The owner also removes people from the group.

What can't I change when I edit an expense in EvenOut?

The group or friend the expense belongs to cannot be changed, and while editing you cannot add a photo, a repeat or a note. You can still mark the expense as pending. To move an expense to a different group, delete it and add it again there.
