Dropbox Family plan: who can join and how to split it

4 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

Dropbox Family shares one 2 TB pool among up to 6 members in total, and each member keeps their own account. Dropbox Plus is listed at $9.99 a month for 1 person with 2 TB, as of October 2026, so six separate Plus plans cost $59.94 a month, the number to beat. EvenOut's Repeat can split the bill you are charged each month or year.

Key points

  • Dropbox Family shares 2 TB among up to 6 members in total. One person manages the plan and invites up to 5 more, and each member has their own account.
  • Dropbox Plus is listed at $9.99 a month for 1 person with 2 TB, as of October 2026, so six separate Plus plans cost 6 times $9.99, which is $59.94 a month.
  • Split evenly, 2 TB across 6 members is about 0.33 TB each, while each Plus plan holds a full 2 TB for one person.
  • Every $6.00 that your Family bill sits under $59.94 saves each of six members $1.00 a month compared with six Plus plans.
  • In EvenOut, set the bill as paid by the person charged, split equally, with a monthly or yearly Repeat. The free plan has no daily expense limit.

What is the Dropbox Family plan?

As of October 2026, Dropbox’s help page describes the Family plan as 2 TB of storage shared by up to 6 members in total. One person manages the plan and invites up to 5 more, and each member keeps their own Dropbox account.

This page uses no Family price. It shows how to compare and split whatever figure Dropbox charges you.

How does Family differ from Plus?

Family is one shared pool, and Plus is one pool per person. As of October 2026, Dropbox Plus is listed at $9.99 a month “For 1 person” with 2 TB. The table sets six Plus plans against one Family plan for the same six people.

Six Plus plans One Family plan
Members 6, each on their own plan Up to 6 on one plan
Storage 2 TB each, 12 TB in all 2 TB shared by everyone
Who manages it Each person One manager invites up to 5 more
Monthly bill $59.94 (6 times $9.99) The Family price you are charged

When is Family the cheaper option?

Family wins only if both the price and the space work out. Start with price. Six Plus plans cost 6 times $9.99, which is $59.94 a month, so that is the number to beat. Every $6.00 your Family bill sits under $59.94 saves each of six members $1.00 a month.

Then check space, because the pool is shared. Treat 1 TB as 1,000 GB. Split evenly, 2 TB across 6 members is about 0.33 TB each. Say four members store 400 GB, 300 GB, 250 GB and 100 GB. That is 1,050 GB, so it fits in 2 TB with 950 GB to spare. Two people who each store 1,200 GB need 2,400 GB between them, which does not fit. They would need two Plus plans instead, which is 2 times $9.99, or $19.98 a month, and gives each person 2 TB.

If storage is the goal, other plans share too. As of October 2026, iCloud+ with 2 TB is $9.99 a month and shares with up to 5 other family members, and Microsoft 365 Family is $12.99 a month for 1 to 6 people with 1 TB each. The comparison of shared subscription plans lists more, and there are separate guides to splitting iCloud storage and sharing Google One.

How do you split the Dropbox bill?

The plan has one payer, whoever’s card Dropbox charges, and everyone else owes an equal part. Here is the setup in EvenOut:

  1. Create a group and add the members. Use “Add a guest” for anyone who is not on EvenOut yet.
  2. Tap “Add expense”, enter the amount from the Dropbox bill and set “Paid by” to the person who is charged.
  3. Leave the split on “Split equally”. If fewer than six seats are used, tap anyone who is not on the plan to leave them out.
  4. Open “Photo, repeat, pending or note”, choose “Repeat” and pick “Monthly” or “Yearly” to match the billing period.
  5. Save. The expense you save is the first one, and EvenOut adds each later one for you with the same payer and split.

Everyone then pays the person who was charged and records it with “Settle up”. EvenOut records the payment and does not move money. If Dropbox changes the price, open “Repeating expenses” from the group menu and use “Stop repeating”, which keeps the expenses already added, then add the new amount with its own Repeat.

Members who use very different amounts of space can split by “Shares” instead. Type each person’s storage in GB, such as 400, 300, 250 and 100. The 400 GB member holds 400 of the 1,050 GB and pays 38.1 percent of each bill, and the 100 GB member pays 9.5 percent. The shared plan cost per person calculator does the plain division for any plan and head count.

Frequently asked questions

Who can join a Dropbox Family plan?

Dropbox's help page says members must be 13 or older in the US and that the plan is for personal use only, so it cannot be created with a corporate email address. Each member keeps their own Dropbox account, and the manager can invite up to 5 more people, so 6 members is the most.

What is the number to beat if fewer than six people share it?

Multiply $9.99 by the number of people. Two people on separate Plus plans cost $19.98 a month, and five cost $49.95. Compare that with the Family bill you are charged, and check that everyone's files fit in 2 TB together.

Can someone without EvenOut still have a share?

Yes, in a group. "Add a guest" tracks the share of someone who is not on EvenOut yet, and you can invite them later to claim it. EvenOut records what they owe and does not move money, so they still pay you directly.
