How to leave a Splitwise group: settle up first, then step out
Quick answer
Splitwise says leaving a group only removes you, and a 2015 Support reply set the condition at a balance of 0 within the group. Clear your balance by recording a cash payment under Settle up, which moves no money, or by editing yourself off expenses you were added to by mistake. Do not delete the group to get out, because deleting removes it for every member.
Key points
- Splitwise Support's 2015 answer is that you can remove yourself once your balance in the group is 0. Leaving removes only you. Deleting a group removes it for every member.
- Splitwise describes two ways to reach zero: record a cash payment under Settle up, which moves no money, or edit yourself off expenses you were added to by mistake.
- With Simplify Debts on, the balance may be with someone you never paid, so clear the balance the group shows, not the one you remember.
- If the option is missing, email support@splitwise.com. Splitwise aims to reply to most requests within 1 business day.
- In EvenOut, leaving a group works offline and syncs when you reconnect.

Can you leave a Splitwise group?
Yes, once you are settled up in it. Splitwise’s help center says: “If you are settled up, you may want to consider leaving the group instead, which only removes you.” In a March 2015 reply on its feedback forum, Splitwise Support said: “You can remove yourself from a group once your balance is 0 within the group.” The same reply says that if you were added to expenses in error, you can remove yourself from them by editing the bill.
So the work is getting to zero. The steps below are in order.
What do you do before you leave?
Clear your balance, take yourself off any expense you should not be on, and keep a copy of the group.
- Check your balance in the group. Use Balances in the group header. The Totals screen is not meant to show your current balance.
- Clear what you owe. Pay the person, then tap “Settle up” and choose “Record a cash payment”. Splitwise says this “won’t transfer any funds”, so the money itself has to move another way.
- Clear what you are owed. When the person pays you back, record it the same way.
- Or take yourself off an expense you were added to by mistake. On mobile, tap the expense, then the pencil icon in the top right corner, and take yourself off it. Repeat for every expense that includes you.
- Export a copy first. On mobile, open the group, scroll the menu in the header to the right and tap Export. On the web, click the gear icon and choose “Export Spreadsheet”.
What does editing yourself off an expense do to the others?
It raises everyone else’s share, so tell them first. Say you were added to three expenses of $30.00, $12.00 and $45.00, each split equally among 4 people, you included. Your shares are $7.50, $3.00 and $11.25. Take yourself off and the other three split each one: $10.00, $4.00 and $15.00. Each of them pays $2.50, $1.00 and $3.75 more, which is $7.25 across the three.
Why does the balance name someone you never paid?
Simplify Debts can move your balance to a different person. It restructures who owes whom within a group to minimize the number of payments, and it never changes anyone’s total balance. Say you owe Ana $20 and Ana owes Ben $20. With it on, the group shows you owing Ben $20 and Ana owing nothing.
To get to zero, record the payment to Ben, even though you never dealt with him. Turning Simplify Debts off changes who owes whom, and Splitwise recommends leaving it on once payments have been made.
What do leaving, removing and deleting each do?
Leaving affects only you, removing affects one person, and deleting affects everyone.
| Action | Who it affects | What Splitwise says |
|---|---|---|
| Leave a group | Only you | It “only removes you”. Support’s 2015 condition is a balance of 0 within the group |
| Remove a person | That person | “you’ll need to clear their balance first” |
| Delete a group | Every member | It “removes it for all group members, not just you” |
Splitwise’s removal steps are written for taking a person out of a group. On mobile, open the group, tap the gear icon in the top right corner, tap the person’s name and select the option to remove them. On the web, open the group from the left-hand sidebar, click the gear icon, choose “Edit group settings” and click the red X next to the name. Support’s 2015 reply says you can remove yourself, and the same balance condition applies, so settle up first.
What if you cannot find the option to remove yourself?
Email support@splitwise.com with the group’s name and say that your balance in it is 0. Splitwise aims to reply to most support requests within 1 business day. Include the date you finished settling up, so the reply can start from the right place.
Others have hit the same problem. Users on the same forum thread reported between 2015 and 2019 that no option to remove themselves appeared even at a zero balance, and a 2022 comment says an expense edit let them remove other people but not themselves.
What is the difference between leaving a group and leaving Splitwise?
Leaving a group takes you out of one group, and closing your account is a separate action. In account settings, scroll to the bottom and select “Close your account”, then deactivate with your current password or an emailed link. Permanent deletion may take up to 30 days and is irreversible. How to leave Splitwise covers the whole sequence, and deleting or undeleting a Splitwise group covers the case where you removed the group for everyone.
How does it work in EvenOut?
In EvenOut a member can leave a group even offline, and the change syncs when you reconnect. The group’s owner sets roles and removes people. If the whole group is moving, export it from Splitwise and use “Import from Splitwise” under Account, which is free and takes one group per file. Moving a Splitwise group to EvenOut has the steps.
What should you do next?
Open the group, read your balance, and record each payment. Once you are at zero, remove yourself with the steps above, write to support if the option does not show, and tell the group you have gone. If another member needs to come off the list instead, how to remove someone from a Splitwise group covers that.
Frequently asked questions
Can you rejoin a Splitwise group after leaving?
Splitwise says you cannot join a group on your own. A member has to invite you by email, phone or "Invite via link", so rejoining means being invited again. Tell the group before you leave if you might come back.
I deleted the group instead of leaving. Can I undo it?
Yes. Undeleting restores the group and all of its expenses and payments. On mobile, open the Activity tab, tap the record of the deletion and tap "OK". On the web, open "Recent activity" and choose "Undelete group".
What if my balance is a few cents off zero?
Record a payment for the exact amount, cents included. The condition Splitwise states is a balance of 0, so clear every cent. Say a $100.00 bill split three ways left you owing $33.34: record a payment of $33.34, not $33.00.
Where do you see whether Simplify Debts is on?
On mobile, tap the gear icon in the top right of the group page and scroll down to the toggle. On the web, click the gear icon, choose "Edit group settings", then "Advanced settings". Any group member can change it, and Splitwise recommends leaving it on once payments have been made.
