How to remove someone from a Splitwise group
Quick answer
EvenOut's group Owner sets roles and removes people, and Splitwise says it has no group admins, as of October 2026. To remove someone in Splitwise, open the group, tap the gear icon, tap the person's name and remove them, or on the web use Edit group settings and the red X. A balance blocks removal until you clear it.
Key points
- In EvenOut the group Owner sets roles, removes people and picks "Everyone" or "Only their own" under "Who can edit". Splitwise has no group admins or special permissions as of October 2026.
- EvenOut has a Viewer role that sees everything and can comment but cannot add or change expenses, and a Splitwise group imports free.
- Mobile: group, gear icon, tap the name, remove. Web: group, gear icon, Edit group settings, red X next to the name.
- An outstanding balance blocks removal. Clear it with a recorded cash payment, which moves no funds, or by editing the person off shared expenses.

How do you remove someone from a Splitwise group?
As of October 2026, you remove a person from the group’s settings, and the steps differ slightly between the mobile app and the website.
On mobile:
- Go to your group.
- Tap the gear icon in the upper right corner.
- Tap the name of the person you want to remove, then choose the option to remove them.
On the web (splitwise.com):
- Find the group in the left sidebar.
- Click the gear icon at the top of the page and choose “Edit group settings”.
- Click the red “X” next to the name of the person you want to remove.
How do you check whether the person has a balance?
Open “Balances” in the group header. Splitwise says the Totals screen is not intended to show your current balance, so Balances is the place to read who owes what. On a laptop or desktop, “View Printable Summary” below “Settle Up” is another place to double-check them. If the person has no balance, use the removal steps above. If they do, clear it first.
What blocks you from removing someone?
An outstanding balance does. Splitwise says that if the person has one, you need to clear their balance first. There are two ways, and they are not interchangeable.
- Record a cash payment. Under “Settle up”, choose “Record a cash payment”. Splitwise notes that it won’t transfer any funds, it only records that the balance was paid. Use it when the person really did pay you or the group, outside Splitwise.
- Edit them off the shared expenses. Open each expense that includes them, tap the pencil icon and take them off it. Use it when they should never have been on the expense.
Say Dan owes $18.50 in the group and handed over $18.50 in cash last week. Record a cash payment of $18.50, the balance reads zero, and you can remove him.
Editing is different, because it changes what everyone else owes. Say Dan was added by mistake to a $60 dinner split four ways, $15 each. Take him off and the same $60 splits three ways, $20 each, so each of the other three now owes $5 more. Tell the group before you edit, because their balances change.
Can you remove yourself from a group?
The steps above are written for taking out another person. Splitwise’s help center says that if you are settled up, leaving the group instead of deleting it only removes you. Deleting a group is not a way out, because deleting removes the group for every member.
Settle up before you go, and check the group’s settings in your version of the app. How to leave Splitwise covers the full order for leaving the app, and deleting or undeleting a Splitwise group covers the case where the group itself is finished.
Does Splitwise have group admins?
No. Splitwise says it does not support group admins or special permissions, and that anyone involved in an expense or its group can edit or delete it. A removal and a cash payment both change what everyone sees, so both deserve a message to the group first.
EvenOut gives every group an Owner, who sets roles and removes people. The Owner also chooses, under “Who can edit”, between “Everyone” (“Any member can add, edit or delete any expense”) and “Only their own” (“People change only what they added or paid for”). Members can add expenses and settle up. A Viewer sees everything and can comment, but cannot add or change expenses, which suits a landlord who wants to follow along.
What should you do next?
Clear the balance, then remove the person and tell the group what changed. If the balance came from a payment you recorded outside Splitwise, how to settle up in Splitwise shows where “Record a cash payment” sits. If it came from an expense that should change, editing, deleting and restoring a Splitwise expense covers the pencil icon. To bring someone in rather than take them out, see adding someone to a Splitwise group.
If you want one person in charge of roles and removals, set the group up in EvenOut. Moving a Splitwise group to EvenOut is free and brings over its expenses and payments, one group per file.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add someone to the group afterward?
Use the same gear icon. On mobile, open the group, tap the gear icon and choose Add people to group. On the web, open Edit group settings and choose Add a person. The steps are in the guide to adding someone to a Splitwise group.
What if I record a cash payment by mistake?
Delete it. On mobile, open the Activity tab, tap the payment and tap the trash can icon at the top right. On the web, open Recent Activity, hover over the payment and click the red trash can icon. The balance returns, and the person is blocked from removal again.
What if the person owes money and will not pay?
Leave them in the group until it is resolved, and do not record a payment that did not happen. Recording one tells everyone the money arrived, which wipes the debt from the balances. The guide on a friend who owes money and will not pay covers your options.
