Splitwise Card: what it is, who gets it and what it costs

4 min read By The EvenOut team

Quick answer

The Splitwise Card is a Mastercard debit card, virtual or physical, for eligible US users of Splitwise Pay, with no monthly fee and a $5.00 replacement fee, as of October 2026. Purchases can auto-split with a group or friend, and Splitwise says they need no Pro subscription. EvenOut has no card, and its free plan has no daily expense limit.

Key points

  • EvenOut has no card, wallet or withdrawal fee. It records payments only, and its free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads.
  • The Splitwise Card is a Mastercard debit card, not a credit card. As of October 2026 Splitwise lists no monthly fee and no foreign transaction fees, and a replacement card costs $5.00.
  • The card is rolling out to eligible Splitwise Pay users, who must be US residents aged 18 or over and pass identity checks that include a Social Security number.
  • Splitwise says expenses the card adds need no Pro subscription, while its free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026. EvenOut's free plan includes charts and search.
  • The card cannot be used at ATMs or for cash. Money leaves the wallet by transfer, and an instant withdrawal costs 1.75%.

What is the Splitwise Card?

The Splitwise Card is a Mastercard debit card that spends money from your Splitwise Pay wallet. As of October 2026 it comes in two forms: a virtual card you can use straight away for online purchases, and a physical card you request in the Splitwise app, which Splitwise says ships in about 5 to 7 business days. The wallet can top up automatically from an eligible connected bank account.

Splitwise says it is “a financial technology company, not a bank”, and the banking services come from Coastal Community Bank.

Is the Splitwise Card a credit or a debit card?

It is a debit card. It spends what is in your wallet, so it is not a credit card, and Splitwise’s page for it calls it a Mastercard debit card.

Who can get the Splitwise Card?

As of October 2026, the card is for eligible US users of Splitwise Pay. Splitwise says it is in the process of launching the card to eligible Splitwise Pay users, and that Splitwise Pay and the card are currently only available to US residents.

Splitwise Pay needs you to be 18 or older and a US resident. It runs identity checks that include a verified phone number, legal name, home address, date of birth and Social Security number, and approval rests with Splitwise and Coastal Community Bank. If you live elsewhere, what Splitwise can and cannot do outside the US lists the other features that depend on region.

What does the Splitwise Card cost?

Using the card has no monthly charge, and the fee table lists a charge only for a replacement card and for instant withdrawals. Splitwise describes the card as having “no monthly fees, no foreign transaction fees”. The Splitwise Pay terms, last updated September 28, 2026, give the rest.

Item Cost
Monthly fee $0.00
Foreign transactions No additional fees
Standard electronic transfer with a bank account, in or out $0.00
Instant withdrawal to a debit card or eligible bank 1.75%, minimum $0.25, maximum $25
Replacement physical card $5.00

Say you move $600 out of the wallet. A standard transfer costs $0.00. An instant withdrawal costs 1.75% of $600, which is $10.50. Your own bank can add fees of its own, and Splitwise tells you to ask it. The weekly limits and the withdrawal steps are in the Splitwise withdrawal limit guide.

How do card purchases get split?

Splitwise gives two modes. With “split as you go” you review and split each purchase yourself. With “auto-split” purchases go to a default group or friend. Splits can be “50/50, 60/40, or any other way you like”, and you can change the settings in the card settings at any time.

Say you buy $84.00 of groceries on the card and auto-split is set to a housemate at 60/40, with you taking the 60. You carry $50.40 and your housemate owes $33.60.

Does the Splitwise Card get around the 4 a day limit?

Splitwise says it does, for eligible US users and for the expenses the card adds. Splitwise’s free plan allows up to 4 expenses a day, as of October 2026, and the card page says using the card adds expenses to Splitwise with “no Splitwise Pro subscription required”. The card is a route around the cap only for people who qualify for Splitwise Pay, so for everyone else the options are the ones in the Splitwise daily limit guide. Is Splitwise free shows what else the free plan includes.

What can’t you do with the Splitwise Card?

You cannot take cash out. Splitwise’s Pay terms say “Your Splitwise Card cannot be used for cash withdrawal at ATMs or elsewhere”, and attempts to use it for cash are denied. To get money out of the wallet you transfer it to a linked bank account instead.

The card is also separate from the other ways to settle in the US. Splitwise offers Venmo and PayPal integrations too, and does Splitwise connect to Venmo covers that setup. For the safety side of the wallet the card draws on, see whether Splitwise Pay is safe.

What does EvenOut do instead?

EvenOut has no card and no wallet. It tracks expenses and records payments. “Settle up” saves a payment you made some other way and moves no money, so there is no withdrawal fee and no weekly limit. Expenses are added by hand, or from a photo of a receipt with EvenOut Pro.

The free plan has no daily expense limit and no ads, so nothing needs a card to get around a cap. Charts, search and repeating expenses are free as well. If you are weighing the two, EvenOut vs Splitwise lines them up, and moving a Splitwise group to EvenOut shows the free import.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get the Splitwise Card?

Splitwise says the card is for US-based users with an active Splitwise Pay account and that it is launching to eligible Splitwise Pay users. People with access see Your Splitwise Card in their wallet, and anyone without it can email cardsupport@splitwise.com to request access.

What happens to a refund on a card purchase?

The card page says refunds go back to your Splitwise Pay wallet balance and can take several weeks, so the money for a returned item is not back straight away.

Does the card replace a Splitwise Pro subscription?

No. Splitwise's Pro page lists more than the expense limit, including charts, expense search, currency conversion, receipt scanning and itemization, default splits and an ad-free experience. The card page's Pro line is about adding expenses.
